Description of Medical Service

A blood test (NT-proBNP assay), requested by a cardiologist to determine the level of cardiac neurohormone in the blood of a patient with a suspected heart failure. The result of the test informs subsequent treatment.

Description of Medical Condition

Heart failure occurs when the heart muscle does not pump blood as well as it should. The result is that blood often backs up and fluid can build up in the lungs, causing shortness of breath.
