Professor Jo-anne Brien was appointed to the inaugural chair in Clinical Pharmacy (St Vincent’s Hospital), Faculty of Pharmacy, The University of Sydney in 2000. She is also a Conjoint Professor of Medicine at the St Vincent’s Hospital Clinical School, Faculty of Medicine, University of New South Wales. Previous academic appointments include Senior Lecturer at Monash University (1992-1999) and Assistant Professor, University of Iowa, USA, 1990-1992. Professor Brien’s pharmacy qualifications are Bachelor of Pharmacy (University of Sydney 1979), Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Pharmacy (Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences, Boston 1990) and clinical experience includes specialised hospital pharmacy practice in Australia, the UK and the USA. Professor Brien is currently Chair of the St Vincent’s Hospital Human Research Ethics Committee and is Deputy Chair of the St Vincent’s Hospital Drug and Therapeutics Committee. Professor Brien is the Chair of the Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network NSW Human Research Ethics Committee and a member of the Management Committee of the NSW Therapeutic Advisory Group (NSWTAG). Professor Brien has supervised 40 postgraduate research students in the areas of Quality Use of Medicines and health services research and has published over 120 papers.
