| Stage 3 - Formulation of Advice to the Minister | This assessment was considered by the MSAC at the 13 August 2003 meeting. The MSAC recognised that hysteroscopic sterilisation by tubal cannulation and placement of intrafallopian implant is an evolving technology but as there was presently insufficient evidence pertaining to its safety, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness, the MSAC recommended that public funding for the procedure should not be supported at this time. The Minister for Health and Ageing accepted MSAC's advice on the safety, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of this technology. However, as more Australian data are due to become available shortly, the Minister approved a continuation of interim reimbursement until November 2007, to allow further assessment to occur. Endorsed by the Minister for Health and Ageing March 2005 Following the collection of data, Hysteroscopic Sterilisation was reconsidered by the MSAC at the 23 November 2007 meeting. MSAC has considered safety, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness for Hysteroscopic sterilisation by Tubal Cannulation and Placement of Intrafallopian implants MSAC agreed to support full public funding under the current item number 35633 as Hysteroscopic sterilisation has assumed a place in clinical practice. The MSAC concluded that there was sufficient new evidence in the AMA submission, the Pivotal Trial report and the bibliography of publications related to Hysteroscopic Sterilisation, to demonstrate that it as safe as, and more effective than, comparable procedures |
