| Stage 2 - Assessment | Completed |
| Stage 3 - Formulation of Advice to the Minister | This assessment was considered by the MSAC at the 13 August 2003 meeting. The MSAC recommended that on the strength of evidence pertaining to M2AŽ Capsule Endoscopy for use in obscure GI bleeding, interim funding should be supported for this procedure for patients with confirmed recurrent obscure GI bleeding following previous colonoscopy and endoscopy without identifying the bleeding source. The recommendation is to be reviewed no later that three years from the date of this report. Endorsed by the Minister for Health and Ageing 7 September 2003 Following the collection of data, Capsule Endoscopy for the evaluation of obscure gastronintestinal bleeding was reconsidered by the MSAC at the 23 November 2007 meeting. MSAC has considered safety, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness for Capsule Endoscopy for use in obscure gastrointestinal bleeding. The MSAC recommended that full public funding be supported under the current item number 11820 as Capsule endoscopy is as safe as and more effective than comparable diagnostic tests. It is the preferred choice of patients and has the potential to reduce the number and cost of previous investigations. |
