Reason for application

Service or technology in this application

Measurable residual disease (MRD) testing uses highly sensitive laboratory methods to look for very small numbers of myeloma cancer cells that remain after treatment. These amounts may be too low to see under a microscope. The main test methods used are flow cytometry, which identifies cells by their features, and molecular methods like next-generation sequencing (NGS), which checks genetic material. Doctors can use the results to see how well treatment has worked and estimate the risk that multiple myeloma will return. This may help them decide whether a person needs more or less intensive treatment.

Medical condition this application addresses

Multiple myeloma is an aggressive cancer that starts in the bone marrow, where blood cells are made. It causes plasma cells, a type of white blood cell that helps fight infection, to develop abnormally. These cancer cells build up in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy cells, reducing the body's ability to make normal blood cells. Symptoms can include bone pain, repeated infections, tiredness and signs of kidney disease. Multiple myeloma often returns after treatment.
