1629.1 – Defensive Antibacterial Coating (DAC) with antibiotics for reducing the risk of periprosthetic surgical site infection

Defensive Antibacterial Coating (DAC) is a sterile, single-use powder (that is classified as a medical device) that is mixed with an antibiotic solution to form a hydrogel. The DAC+antibiotic hydrogel is applied to the surface of artificial joints used in total joint replacement surgery. The coating aims to reduce the risk of infection during and after surgery by stopping different types of bacteria from sticking to and growing on the implant.

A surgical site infection is an infection of the skin or soft tissue where surgery took place. If it is not treated, bacteria can spread deeper and infect an artificial joint. This is called a periprosthetic joint infection. It is a serious condition that can cause the implant to fail, which can require another operation to replace or repair it.
