Reason for application

Service or technology in this application

A coronary artery calcium score is used to assess the amount of hardened fatty deposits (calcified plaque) in the blood vessels (arteries) that supply blood to the heart. This score is determined through a CT scan of the heart that does not require any injections of dye or contrast material. The scan can detect tiny calcium deposits, which are a sign of atherosclerotic plaque. Higher calcium scores usually suggest a person has a greater build-up of calcified plaque and an increased risk of heart attack or stroke. The calcium score, combined with other risk factors such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, and family history, can be used to guide decisions about medications and lifestyle changes to reduce a person’s risk of a cardiovascular event.

Medical condition this application addresses

Coronary atherosclerosis is a condition where cholesterol and other substances build up in the walls of the blood vessels (arteries) that supply the heart, leading to hardening and narrowing of these vessels and increasing the risk of a heart attack. Subclinical atherosclerosis refers to the presence of these fatty deposits (plaques) before symptoms develop. This condition is common across all age groups, and if left untreated can progress to severe disease and an increased risk of a cardiovascular event including a heart attack.
