Service or technology in this application

The proposed service uses F-18 FDG PET scans to help assess and diagnose complex infections. PET scanning is a minimally invasive imaging test that uses small amounts of radioactive material to show activity inside the body. For infections, F-18 FDG PET highlights areas where infection is present by detecting increased activity from immune cells and changes in blood flow caused by inflammation. This information works together with CT scan images to better find and describe areas of active infection.

Medical condition this application addresses

The application is for the investigation of infections in patients where an infection is suspected but the usual first medical checks and tests either cannot be safely done or do not clearly show an infection, or where the infection is hard to find or understand. This could include patients where an infection is suspected but more information is needed, or patients who continue to have a fever where doctors cannot find the cause even after standard tests have been done.
