Service or technology in this application

NT-proBNP is a substance in the blood that increases when the heart is stretched or working under extra strain. Measuring NT-proBNP may help doctors decide when to start, increase, or adjust medicines for each patient.

Medical condition this application addresses

Heart failure is a serious condition where the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs, or can only do so by working under high pressure. When heart failure starts suddenly or gets worse quickly, it is a medical emergency and can be life‑threatening without treatment. Doctors diagnose heart failure using symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing or wheezing, and feeling very tired or unable to do normal activities. Tests may show changes in the heart or in blood results, including NT‑proBNP. About 70,000 people in Australia are admitted to hospital for heart failure for the first time each year, and more than half return to hospital at least once. Treatment using recommended medicines is important to reduce the chance of death or hospital readmission.
